The Purple Heart Batallion

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Daniel Tanaka, a Japanese American (Nisei) student at UC Berkeley, is sent with his family to an incarceration camp before enlisting in the U.S. Army to prove his loyalty. Assigned to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, he endures the horrors of war, including the rescue of the “Lost Battalion” and the liberation of Dachau, while serving with one of the most decorated units in American history. Returning home to continued prejudice, Daniel spends a lifetime finding purpose and, as a Medal of Honor recipient, shares his remarkable journey of courage, sacrifice, and resilience with his grandson.

based on the incredible story of the 442nd regiment

The 442nd Regimental Combat Team was a segregated U.S. Army unit composed almost entirely of second-generation Japanese Americans (Nisei) who fought in World War II. While many of their families were unjustly incarcerated at home, these soldiers volunteered to serve, displaying extraordinary courage and sacrifice on the battlefields of Europe. Fighting under the motto “Go for Broke,” the 442nd became one of the most decorated military units of its size and length of service in American history.
